Maine's "DownEast" Coast

My ideal vacation!
Maine's coast offers glorious glacier scoured beaches and massive boulders. It has calm waters and thundering surf. It has saltwater bogs for kayaking and mountains beckoning rock climbers. It's only 350 miles from Kittery, on the New Hampshire border, to Eastport on the Canadian border. But if you stretched this wonderland of nooks and crannies taut, you'd have nearly 5,500 miles of coast! Just a quick drive from Boston, and a mere six hours by car from New York City, Maine offers a rural paradise that will make you forget the big cities you left behind. Maine is a land of lobster, lighthouses, and breathtaking coastal national parks. It offers top-notch art museums in places like Portland, lots of maritime history in historic towns such as Bath, and plenty of outdoor fun, be it kayaking its sleepy coves or fishing on the open Atlantic. Shop famous locales such as Freeport's L.L.Bean or Bar Harbor's numerous art galleries.
